A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan is one of the most advanced diagnostic imaging techniques used in modern medicine. Unlike conventional imaging that primarily shows organ structure, PET provides information about how tissues and organs are functioning at the cellular level. This makes it an important tool in diagnosis, staging, treatment planning, and follow-up — particularly in cancer, neurological disorders, and heart disease.

While the scan itself is generally safe, many patients have questions after leaving the imaging centre: Can I eat normally? Should I drink more water? Is it safe to be around family? Can I drive? Following a few simple precautions helps improve comfort, supports faster elimination of the tracer, and minimizes unnecessary radiation exposure to others.

What Is a PET Scan?

PET is a nuclear medicine imaging test that evaluates metabolic activity. Most PET scans use a radiotracer called Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), a glucose-based compound labelled with a small amount of radioactive material. Rapidly growing or highly active cells consume more glucose, so those areas appear brighter on PET images.

Why Doctors Recommend a PET Scan

PET scans are commonly used in cancer diagnosis and staging, to assess treatment response, and to look for recurrence. Cardiologists may use PET to evaluate blood flow to the heart muscle. Neurologists may use it to assess brain metabolism in conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, Parkinsonian disorders, and certain types of dementia.

Immediate Precautions After a PET Scan

1. Drink Plenty of Water

The tracer leaves the body primarily through urine. Unless your doctor has advised fluid restriction, extra water throughout the day helps accelerate elimination.

2. Empty Your Bladder Frequently

Avoid holding urine for long periods. Regularly emptying the bladder reduces tracer retained in the urinary system.

3. Resume Normal Eating Unless Advised Otherwise

Most patients can return to a normal diet immediately after the scan.

4. Continue Regular Medications

In most situations, routine medications can resume immediately. If diabetes or oncology medications were adjusted before the scan, follow your physician’s instructions.

5. Monitor the Injection Site

Mild tenderness, slight bruising, or temporary redness can occur. Seek medical advice for increasing pain, significant swelling, persistent redness, fever, or discharge.

6. Rest If You Feel Tired

Most people feel normal after PET. Some patients, particularly those in cancer treatment, may have mild fatigue.

7. Driving

A routine PET scan does not usually affect alertness. Avoid driving if sedation was given until your care team confirms it is safe.

8. Hygiene

Flush as advised by the imaging centre, wash hands thoroughly, and clean accidental urine spills promptly during the first several hours.

9. Breastfeeding

Inform the nuclear medicine physician. Temporary interruption of breastfeeding may be recommended depending on the tracer used.

Should You Avoid Close Contact?

For most routine PET scans, patients can return to normal daily activities. Providers generally recommend limiting prolonged close contact with pregnant women, infants, and young children for the first several hours after the scan. Your nuclear medicine physician will advise if extra restrictions apply.

Work, Exercise, and Alcohol

If the scan was outpatient and you feel well, you can usually return to work the same day unless sedation or treatment-related fatigue is a factor. Light activity is typically fine; strenuous exercise is often best avoided for the rest of the day if you feel tired. Prioritise water; delay alcohol until you are well hydrated, and follow any treatment-specific advice from your oncologist or physician.

When to Contact Your Doctor

• Fever, increasing injection-site pain, or swelling
• Unusual weakness, dizziness, or allergic-type symptoms
• Any instruction from your treating team that you are unsure how to follow

Most after-scan precautions are temporary and only needed for the remainder of the day unless your specialist advises otherwise.
